How to clean your own solar panels

Cleaning your solar panels ensures they operate at peak efficiency. Find out how to do it yourself.

Your solar panels can't operate at peak efficiency if they aren't clean. If you can access your array safely, check out this guide to doing a professional job.

Basic Cleaning Steps

  • rinse and apply solution. Use a garden hose or a bucket of clean water to remove loose dirt, dust, and debris from the panel's surface
  • apply a diluted solar panel cleaning solution to soften bird droppings and other particles.
  • use a soft-bristled brush or a squeegee specifically designed for solar panels. Gently scrub the panel's surface in a back-and-forth or circular motion, working from top to bottom
  • avoid using abrasive materials or harsh chemicals that could damage the panels
  • rinse the panels again with clean water to wash off the cleaning solution
  • allow the panels to air dry or use a soft cloth to gently dry them.

Professional Cleaning

Professionals often use demineralised water, which is free of minerals and impurities, to prevent streaks and residue on the panels. This method involves using a water-fed brush system that gently cleans the panels without scratching them.

Safety Tips

  • if you cannot safely access your roof or don't have the right equipment to do the job safely, call the professionals
  • clean your panels early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid rapid evaporation of water, which can leave streaks
  • check your panel manufacturer’s instructions for shutting down the system before cleaning to ensure safety
  • use extension poles and soft brushes to avoid climbing on the roof, reducing the risk of accidents.

4. Frequency of Cleaning

  • the frequency of cleaning depends on your location and environmental conditions. Areas with high dust, pollution, or bird activity may require more frequent cleaning
  • inspect your panels regularly for dirt buildup and clean them as needed to maintain efficiency.

Regular maintenance and proper cleaning techniques are key to getting the most out of your solar investment.
