The first planting is going strong and it's time for the next stage!

Barung Landcare and community are continuing their habitat restoration for one of Australia’s most extraordinary and endangered insects – the Southern Pink Underwing Moth! This striking moth relies on a single plant: the Carronia vine, a subtropical rainforest climber that thrives in the deep shade of remnant forest.

The plan

The plan is to create a dense native microforest using thick mulch and closely spaced rainforest plants. This technique mimics natural rainforest regeneration, builds canopy cover quickly, suppresses weeds, and retains moisture for sensitive understorey plants like Carronia.

Who Can Join?

  • No planting experience required
  • Families welcome (children must be supervised)
  • Max 50 places – bookings essential!

What to Bring

  • Hat, sunscreen, water bottle
  • Gloves if you have them (we’ll have spares)
  • Sturdy shoes or boots
  • Raincoat if weather looks wet
  • A chair or blanket (if you wish for morning tea!)

On the Day

  • Planting over 500 native tubestock plants!
  • Light morning tea provided

About the Site

Avocado Lane Reserve is a sheltered, moist site with existing remnant rainforest plants—perfect for expanding and enriching habitat for rainforest insects, birds, and mammals.

Partnership

This planting is a partnership between Barung landcare and Healthy Land & Water, funded through the Australian Government’s Saving Native Species grant.
