4 FREE Workshops Series - deep dive into the 4 simple steps of holistic weed management to help you get started & stay on the right track

Trying to manage weeds on your property but don't know where to start, or feel like it's an uphill battle?

The 4 Simple Steps process can help you tackle those wild and weedy areas by breaking down the work into manageable, bite-sized blocks and working with the land to save time, money & wildlife habitat, all in one.

This series of four free guided walks use real-world examples of how the steps were applied to Council's Invasive Weeds Project Maleny demonstration site, which has been used to trial different combinations of weed management and restoration techniques.

Gain foundational knowledge in holistic land management and ecological restoration which will equip you with the problem-solving skills to tackle weeds effectively, strategically and sustainably - learn how to make best practice decisions on a case-by-case basis.

Whether you're just starting out or a seasoned weed warrior, this event is a great opportunity to learn, connect and grow together.

Schedule of events:

  1. Project planning -Thursday 30th April (9:00-11:00AM)
How to make your weed management plan, setting yourself up for success with the right goals, the importance of follow-up maintenance, essential restoration frameworks and principles.
  2. Reading the landscape - Fri 1st May (9:00-11:00AM)
Understand what the land can tell you and how it'll guide your approach, utilising weeds to your advantage and how to prioritise your weeds, time and money.
  3. Tools & techniques - Thurs 7th May (9:00-11:00AM)
How to choose the right tools for your job, expanding your weed mangement toolkit, how to adapt to changes as they happen, combining and perfecting the timing of treatments.
  4. Innovation & trial results - Fri 8th May (9:00-11:00AM)
Explore alternative techniques, where they're most effective and why, such as: creek bank restoration using 'strip clearing', strangler figs for large weed trees, solarisation, transplanting 'native weeds' & tips for herbicide reduction.

Come to one or all four - choose what suits your needs. Attending all four events will give you an in-depth overview of how we undertook restoration works from start to finish, the rationale behind our choices and how we jumped problem-solving hurdles - moving away from prescriptive advice and instead 'teaching a man to fish'.

Each event will include (see agenda for more information):

  • A 2 hour guided walk through the Maleny demonstration site with Council and Barung Landcare, site contractors & local natural area management specialists - ask the experts for advice on weed management, plant identification and handy programs to support you during each stage of the weed management journey. Learn about a variety of different treatment methods, approximate costs and the environmental factors that shaped our trial results.
  • Visit our stall at Barung Landcare native nursery - get connected with services, buy local native plants & and useful resources books to support you on your weed management journey. Ask questions about land management, plant identification, programs happening in your local area.

IMPORTANT!

  • The walk is approximately 3.5 kms return that includes sections of uneven dirt track. Please ensure that you are fit and able to complete the entire walk before registering for this event. Please contact us via email for further information on accessibility and available ammenities.
  • The walk will commence at 9:00 AM sharp - please arrive 15 minutes early (8:45 AM) to sign-in.

The Invasive Weeds Project has been investigating innovative weed management technology to tackle invasive weeds, bring back native plants and share the findings with our community.

Some of our other exciting projects explore the use of:

  • Using drones and Machine Learning (AI) to detect invasive weeds from the sky
  • Environmental DNA (eDNA) water sampling to track weeds that spread undetected through our catchments
  • Remote-controlled machinery for tricky terrain
  • Alternative tools & techniques to help us stay flexible in the toughest management situations.
  • & more!
