Spag bol number one in favourite meal survey


It will come as no surprise to pasta lovers that the family favourite, spaghetti bolognaise, was the most popular home-cooked meal for residents in the Redland area in a recent study.

The study, which included an online survey, was conducted for Redland City Council by Social Marketing @ Griffith University and uncovered some interesting facts about the eating habits of local residents.

Researchers set out to investigate the types of foods residents kept in their fridges, their favourite meals and the foods mostly likely to be wasted in a bid to better understand the factors contributing to food waste.

Many participants reported their favourite home-cooked evening meal as spaghetti bolognaise, with one participant reporting “a staple diet of spag bol as $$ is low enough to survive.”

The next most popular meal was roast meat and vegetables, with curry in third place.

“I love something we can cook up as a family, roast dinner is my favourite and there is enough to be eaten over the following couple of days too,” said a participant.

Running equal fourth were salmon and vegetables, chicken and vegetables, and the Aussie favourite, steak and salad.

On average, residents ate out only once a week, leaving plenty of meals consumed at home or at work. A massive 63% of respondents indicated that they took their own lunch to work, with many favouring leftovers as their preferred work lunch option.

Participants were asked to complete a range of questions about their shopping, eating and cooking habits, with the option to submit a photo of the contents of their refrigerator.

Common fruits and vegetables were high on the list, with carrots, onions, apples, potatoes and tomatoes the most popular items.

Most people reported keeping a collection of fridge ‘staples’ such as eggs, yoghurt, mayonnaise, milk, butter or margarine, soy sauce and cheese plus beverages such as wine and juice.

It was interesting to note that among the common items kept in fridges were onions, tomatoes, spaghetti sauce, tomato sauce and cheese…a perfect foundation for the number one meal, spaghetti bolognaise!
