Eating an ice cream cone can save a turtle!

Eating an ice cream cone can save a turtle!

Who would have thought that choosing to eat an ice cream cone could save a turtle? Given the choice between eating that ice cream from an edible cone or consuming it from a single use cup and plastic spoon - can make a huge difference to our aquatic friends.

Plastic Free Noosa coordinator Chad Buxton says he often picks up plastic spoons and plastic lined cups in areas around ice cream stores. Thousands of these end up on our beaches and are eventually washed into our oceans. Mr Buxton laments “They are single-use, but last virtually forever”.

Plastic Free Noosa has worked with over 100 food retail outlets to help them find alternatives to single-use plastic. Consumers have a lot of power to help facilitate change. “We want to ask our wonderful community to get out there and encourage their favourite ice cream or gelato establishment to ditch the single-use plastic. Tell them you care, and if they need a helping hand, Plastic Free Noosa is always here to help. It may just be the turtle or seabird you next see that you are saving!”

Any food retail business can join up at www.plasticfreenoosa.org.
